2010 Person of the year

Erling Berg and Bill Krippaehne jr. |
Erling first arrived in the United States in 1951, working as a carpenter with his uncles; returning to Norway in November of 1953. In January of 1954, he married Hjordis Ronning and returned to the United States in April of the same year. He took his American citizenship in 1956 and became a licensed and bonded general contractor building many single-family homes and multi-family dwellings throughout the Seattle area.
He and his wife have three daughters: Anita, Sonja, and Heidi. He has been an active member of the Norwegian-American community since his permanent arrival in 1954 with memberships, among others, in the Sons of Norway, Norwegian Male Chorus and the Norwegian Commercial Club, not to mention playing on numerous “Viking” soccer clubs from 1954 until the mid-80’s. He has also been involved with Norway Park in Ballard, as well as the 17th of May parade.
Yet, perhaps, he is most well known for his tireless efforts as a cross country ski guide and volunteer with Ski for Light, since its inception here in the Puget Sound area in 1976. Ski for Light is dedicated to providing a ski experience to the visually and mobility impaired. In this capacity, he has been instrumental in the dedication and maintenance of the Erling Stordal Nordic Ski Area at Trollhaugen Lodge near Stampede Pass here in Washington State.
